Nicholas Ong won first prize at the Yvonne Lefebure International Piano Competition in France and was a finalist at the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Switzerland. He was praised in the New York Times for his "firm rubber-ball touch and bounce" and in the Figaro for his "astonishing virtuosity."
He began piano lessons at age six and made his first concert appearance on national television three years later. He was awarded a French Government Scholarship to study with Marian Rybicki at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, where he graduated with the highest distinction. To widen his musical horizon, he went to the United States and studied with Robert McDonald, obtaining a Master of Music degree at the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York.
Dr. Ong performs regularly on the concert stage and at music festivals. As soloist, he has performed with the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the contemporary ensemble 2e2m, the New Juilliard Ensemble and the Malaysian National Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, the KL Contemporary Music Festival, Symphony Space, Miller Theatre, Focus! Festival, the Chopin Festival in Paris, Salle Gaveau in Paris, Festival de l'Orangerie, Saint-Riquier, Jeunes Pianistes Virtuoses in Lyon, the Villa Medicis Festival in Rome, and numerous concerts in the United States, Europe and Asia. An accomplished musician, he is also a sought-after accompanist and has given concert tours in Arizona, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, New York, and South Korea with renowned orchestra musicians and talented young instrumentalists
